The Best Ways to Watch AFL Football Live Overseas and how to watch afl live overseas
Before diving into the specific platforms, it is crucial to understand why learning how to watch afl overseas is a challenge in the first place. The Australian Football League (AFL) negotiates strict, multi-million dollar broadcasting contracts. In Australia, the rights are predominantly held by Channel 7 (for free-to-air games) and Foxtel/Kayo Sports (for comprehensive digital and pay-TV coverage).
Because these networks only hold the rights to broadcast within Australian borders, they implement a digital barrier known as geo-blocking. When you try to load the 7plus app or Kayo Sports from an IP address in the USA or the UK, the server detects your location and denies you access. Overcoming this barrier requires either purchasing an international broadcasting pass specifically designed for expats, or using network routing tools to virtually relocate your device back to Australia.
Official Broadcasters: Using WatchAFL for International Streaming
If you want the most straightforward, officially sanctioned method for figuring out how to watch afl football overseas, look no further than WatchAFL. Powered by Fox Sports Australia, WatchAFL is the league’s dedicated international streaming service.
WatchAFL provides every single match of the Toyota AFL Premiership Season, the Finals Series, and the Grand Final live and on-demand. Additionally, it offers 24/7 access to the Fox Footy channel, providing endless commentary, news, and analysis.
Subscription Tiers Breakdown
WatchAFL offers three distinct subscription tiers tailored to different types of fans:
- Weekly Pass: Ideal for casual fans or those who only want to tune in for a specific blockbuster match or rivalry round.
- Monthly Pass: A flexible option for fans who want to follow the action for a few weeks without a long-term commitment.
- Annual Pass: The best value for die-hard fans. This pass guarantees access for a full 12 months, ensuring you catch the pre-season, the home-and-away season, and the Grand Final.
Device compatibility is excellent. You can stream WatchAFL on Smart TVs, Amazon Firestick, Apple TV, Android, and iOS devices. The app supports casting via Chromecast and AirPlay, making it incredibly easy to get the game onto the big screen in your living room.
How to Watch AFL Overseas for Free Using a VPN
While WatchAFL is convenient, it can be quite expensive. If you are looking for a budget-friendly solution and want to know how to watch afl overseas for free, using a Virtual Private Network (VPN) in conjunction with Australia’s free-to-air networks is your best bet.
Channel 7 broadcasts three to four live games per week during the regular season, plus the entire Finals Series and the Grand Final. By using a VPN, you can mask your international IP address and make it appear as though you are browsing from Sydney or Melbourne, unlocking the 7plus streaming app.
Step-by-Step Setup Guide
- Select a Premium VPN Provider: Choose a reliable VPN with high-speed servers in Australia. Avoid free VPNs, as they often lack the bandwidth for live sports.
- Install the Application: Download and install the VPN app on your preferred device (PC, smartphone, or Smart TV).
- Connect to an Australian Server: Open the VPN application and select a server located in Australia (e.g., Melbourne, Sydney, or Perth).
- Create a 7plus Account: Navigate to the 7plus website or download the app. Register for a free account (you may need to provide an Australian postcode, such as 3000 for Melbourne).
- Start Streaming: Search for the AFL live stream in the sports section and enjoy the game!
Alternative Methods: Streaming AFL via Premium IPTV Services
For those who want more than just Aussie Rules, premium IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) platforms offer a massive aggregation of global sports networks. If you are figuring out how to watch afl football live alongside English Premier League, NFL, and NBA, an IPTV service can replace multiple expensive subscriptions with one unified dashboard.
Modern IPTV services utilize an M3U Playlist or a dedicated portal linked via your device’s MAC Address. With features like a built-in EPG Guide (Electronic Program Guide) and an extensive VOD Library, premium providers deliver a traditional cable-like experience over the internet.

Legality and Safety: Choosing the Right Streaming Solution
Whenever you are bypassing geo-blocks or using third-party streaming services, legality and digital safety should be top of mind. Using a VPN to access Channel 7plus is generally legal in most western countries; however, it does violate the broadcaster’s Terms of Service. It is highly recommended to review the laws of your specific country of residence before streaming.
When it comes to IPTV, the legal landscape is more nuanced. While the technology itself is completely legal, the content being transmitted must be properly licensed. We dive much deeper into this topic in our comprehensive article answering the question: are iptv services legal? Always ensure you are utilizing secure, encrypted connections and trusted providers to keep your digital footprint safe.
